Culinary firm Design CC was tasked with creating a kitchen within a 1,000-square-foot open-plan living area that would blend style, warmth, and functionality, all while meeting the demands of a large, fast-paced family. 

The challenge was to create a prestigious home, without the pretentiousness often associated to this kind of build, that reflected the tastes of owners who love to entertain and have a deep appreciation for nature. The Modern Farmhouse style, which combines the rustic charm of country homes with sleek, contemporary elements, was the natural choice for this project. 

Designed as the heart of the home, the kitchen was integrated directly into the center of the main open-plan living area. More than just a space for cooking, designer Valérie St-André aimed to create a true gathering place. The clients, enthusiastic hosts of family get-togethers, wanted a design that reflected who they are: welcoming, functional, and warm. A convivial banquette and a large central table naturally became key elements of the concept.

Bringing a touch of nature indoors

The Modern Farmhouse style, with its natural materials, clean lines, and bold contrasts, struck exactly the right tone. The use of textured surfaces and authentic elements helped create a warm, enveloping atmosphere that evokes the feeling of being in the countryside, just as the clients had envisioned. 

The Formica® Birchbark (8684) design, used inside the glass-front cabinets, was an instant favourite for the clients.

“In a project of this scale, every detail counts. The interior of the display cabinets, often left neutral, becomes a design feature in its own right here,” says designer Valérie St-André. “The use of birchbark laminate may seem like a subtle touch, but in reality, it plays a pivotal role in the overall balance of the design. It brings the authenticity of the forest into the space, while preserving the refined aesthetic of a modern farmhouse, without veering into the rustic.” 

Clients have loved this detail, which lets them recapture the spirit of the countryside in their everyday urban lives. Framed by black metal doors, the distinctive pattern stands out while blending seamlessly into the overall design. 

Thanks to its meticulous approach and keen attention to detail, Design CC created a home that is both elegant and inviting, where modernity and nature come together in perfect harmony.
