Combining Homapal metal laminates with the Formica Collection

Nina Bailey, EU Design Lead at Formica Group, brings years of experience in interior design to her exploration of material palettes that combine metal laminates with complementary tones. In this article, she curates three distinctive collections, each showcasing the interplay between texture, finish, and colour.

442 Alu Brushed Goldtone

From earthy, reflective metals to soft, elegant tones, these palettes demonstrate how thoughtful combinations can create depth, contrast, and cohesion, perfect for interiors that are both sophisticated and inviting.

Palette One: Earthy Reflection

There is a growing desire for surfaces with visual depth, alongside a resurgence in high-gloss finishes. The new 478 636 Alu Mirror Polished Lava Clay metal laminate responds to both trends, offering an earthy yet sophisticated texture that is elevated by its metallic nature. When paired with the solid tone of Formica® Laminate in F8241 Earthenware, the palette introduces a tonal dialogue; mirroring the warmth of the metal through a contrasting matte texture that grounds the composition.

The inclusion of F5349 Fossil adds a calm, neutral element that creates breathing space within the palette. F7966 New Burgundy brings a sense of moody opulence, while F9229 Dark Sky Birchply introduces a natural, stylised touch that complements the metal’s refined edge.

Together, these materials form a palette that celebrates contrast and cohesion; organic in spirit, yet meticulously curated in execution.

Palette Two: Structured Opulence

The deep fluted finish of 355 780 Alu Plain Polished Tuet Bronzetone brings structure, movement, and refined sophistication to the palette. This is beautifully contrasted by the organic, expressive quality of F3457 Breccia Paradiso, a natural stone that exudes opulence and classical charm.

F5782 Formal Walnut, with its linear grain, echoes the texture of the Tuet, creating a tactile and visual connection between the metal and woodgrain. Together, they form a harmonious and striking design duo.

F7858 Pumice serves as a soft, natural white, adding lightness and subtle balance, while classic F2253 Diamond Black injects bold contrast and a sense of dramatic depth, anchoring the palette with a strong, confident presence.

Palette Three: Soft Glamour

The interaction between materials, finishes, and lighting plays a pivotal role in shaping current design trends. We're witnessing a strong resurgence of high-gloss stones and liquid-like finishes, ushering in a new era of reflective surfaces. This revival encourages a more generous use of metals, with polished finishes and glossy tones combining to create a truly sensory-rich experience.

The pairing of 442 Alu Brushed Goldtone with the soft pink hues of F8141 Adobe and F8238 Blush results in a delicate, elegant palette, striking a balance between glamour and warmth. Together, these materials create a refined yet approachable composition, where luminosity and softness coexist with quiet confidence.

Palette Three Soft Glamour

Whether you’re designing a commercial hospitality space or a residential interior, these palettes show the possibilities that open up when metal laminates meet complementary tones. Experiment, mix, and layer. Small choices can create a big impact and transform a room’s character.
