Chapel Chill: A Sweet Case Study Featuring Formica® Laminate

Chapel Chill Offers Sweet Scoops With a Community Focus

Discover Chapel Chill: a cozy new handmade ice cream shop focused on creating a welcoming environment with magic behind each scoop.

Chapel Chill

When “Chapel Chill,” a new handmade ice cream shop in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, set out to open its first retail location, the owner envisioned more than just a dessert stop. She wanted a bright, modern space where families, students and neighbors could gather. The goal was to create a welcoming environment with a clean aesthetic, and smooth flow for customers with a view into the production process that showcased the homemade magic behind each scoop.

The shop aims to become a staple in a college town, expecting plenty of foot traffic, so it needs to be easy to clean, offer a modern and fun atmosphere for all ages and to support the functionality of quick service to a hungry audience.

The business moved into an existing suite next to a restaurant in an older building. With a tight budget and the limitations of an existing structure, the design team had to find creative ways to make the space vibrant and functional while keeping costs under control.

Formica® Laminate in Dover White 7197 with a Microdot texture was specified for all new millwork, including the durable laminate used on open storage shelves and the front of the sales counters. This beautiful, impact-resistant laminate features a soft white tone and subtle pattern, creating a clean, modern backdrop that allows the vibrant colors of cones, toppings and frozen treats to stand out. The solid color design adds a sleek, contemporary touch while offering long-lasting performance ideal for high-traffic commercial environments.

“Formica is always a great choice for millwork; this project was no different. The client wanted her homemade ice cream to be the star of the show, and Formica was an integral part of the modern, classic design that made it possible,” said Jennifer Holladay, Senior Interior Designer and lead designer for Chapel Chill from Tina Barnard Designs.
