ST Design Maximizes Kitchen Space with a 180fx® Laminate Island from Formica Group
This kitchen renovation was part of an ambitious project entrusted to ST Design, with a clear objective: maximize available space while preserving a sleek, functional aesthetic.

The main goal was to rethink the existing layout, subtly extending the right-hand side beyond the original space to incorporate a new island and an integrated dining table, all while maintaining a cohesive design language. The major challenge: optimizing storage in a limited space without compromising functionality or style.
To meet this challenge, the refrigerator was relocated to the back wall, freeing up valuable space and allowing natural light to circulate more freely. The addition of the island delivered not only extra work surface but also essential storage, thanks to the built-in cabinetry. The ceramic tile carries through beneath the island, establishing an unbroken visual line that ties the kitchen’s elements together and amplifies the overall sense of unity.
“In a small space, every detail counts: ingenuity pushes boundaries, and material selection is key to ensuring a cohesive space,” explains designer Sophie Tremblay. “The Formica® laminate we selected for the island exemplifies this, unifying the various materials throughout the space.”

The island features a countertop crafted from Formica Group’s 180fx® laminate in Black Fusion (6320-46), a product that offers the look and feel of natural stone with the added benefits of modern durability. The Black Fusion design lends a sense of depth and texture, complementing the kitchen’s other surfaces – countertops, cabinetry, and flooring alike. This modern finish harmonizes effortlessly with the project’s contemporary aesthetic, adding both character and elegance to the space.
With its life-sized, stone-like texture and everyday durability, Formica Group’s 180fx® laminate contributed not only to the kitchen’s visual appeal but also to its long-term resilience and low maintenance. These qualities are essential for kitchen materials, ensuring the space stays beautiful for years to come.

Cited in La Presse as a standout example of high-impact renovation on a budget, this project demonstrates how thoughtful planning and the right material choices can transform even the most compact kitchen into a space that is practical, sophisticated, and timeless.
